About this play
Market-making. The wedge is a tool firms buy; the business is the market it creates.
The first-order wedge: three tools that are really one funnel
A law firm’s business development function does three separate things badly with three separate vendors. It finds opportunities by having someone read announcements, court lists and tender portals. It wins them by assembling tender responses from whatever precedents people can remember. And it stays visible between opportunities by publishing thought leadership on whatever a partner felt like writing about. Built separately, those are three point products in three crowded categories. Built together they are one funnel running on one data spine — the firm’s structured credentials, plus a live feed of external demand signals. The origination agent surfaces the signal, the pursuits engine drafts the response citing the credentials that actually match, and the marketing engine turns the same signal into the follow-up article. Each module makes the other two sharper: credentials improve targeting, signals improve content topics, and won work feeds new credentials back in.
What the wedge quietly accrues
Selling that OS is a decent software business. What makes it a platform is the exhaust. From the pursuits engine you accumulate every participating firm’s credentials in structured form, and every brief that passes through — that is supply-side liquidity nobody else has. From the origination agent you build a commercial signal graph of Australian corporate activity that is licensable well beyond law: accountants, consultants and recruiters want the same feed. From the marketing engine you build an owned audience of in-house counsel readers. Three years in you know, simultaneously, which firms can credibly do what and which companies are about to need what. Directories update annually. Panels update every three years. This updates every morning.
The two parties it connects
On one side, buyers of legal services: general counsel, corporate legal operations teams, government agencies running panel refreshes. On the other, sellers: firms that already run their BD on the platform and already respond to tenders through its pursuits engine. Today those two find each other through relationships, static panel arrangements and directory rankings — a matching mechanism with a resolution of about one year. This demo shows the flip: the Firm view is the wedge as it exists on day one, and the Client view is the market it becomes. The pursuits engine is the supply-side onramp, the signal graph is the demand-side radar, and the in-house readership acquired by the marketing module is how you get the demand side to show up at all.
Endgame and what would kill it
Revenue starts as per-seat SaaS for the OS and ends as a take rate or subscription on the exchange — the same shape as recruiter tooling that turned into a talent marketplace. The wedge is validated the first time a BD manager takes one real signal through origination to a drafted pursuit within a week of onboarding. The exchange is validated by one sentence from one general counsel: that they would post a mid-size brief to a platform instead of emailing three panel firms. That answer is the entire bet, and it is cheap to get early, so get it early. If GCs will not post, this is a well-built BD tool and nothing more.
